Intel、16650円筒型と角形リチウムイオンバッテリーを推進

DIGITIMEより。IntelがUltrabookのコスト削減を目指し、新しい16650バッテリーと角形リチウムイオンバッテリーを熱心に推しているという話。

To lower production costs of ultrabooks, Intel has been aggressively trying to find replacement components and is currently pushing two new battery solutions - 16650 cylindrical battery and prismatic lithium-ion battery - to help reduce costs, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.

However, only a limited supply of the 16650 cylindrical battery is available, so prismatic lithium-ion battery will have a higher chance to success, but due to issues such as capacity and certification, vendors will not have chance to adopt prismatic lithium-ion batteries for their products until 2013.
（しかし、16650円筒型バッテリーは供給が限られており、角形リチウムバッテリーの方が成功率は高いだろう。ただこれも容量と認証の問題があり、ベンダーは2013年まで角形バッテリーを製品に採用することは無いだろう。）

The 16650 cylindrical battery has a diameter of 16mm and is only available from Japan-based Sanyo and China-based BAK, but due to vendors being concerned that supply is fully controlled by only two players, and BAK is unlikely to pass most vendors' certification process, there are concerns about the solution.
（16650円筒型バッテリーは直径16mmで、日本の三洋、中国のBAKからのみ出荷されているが、ベンダーにとってこのソリューションの悩みは16650バッテリーがわずか2社によって完全にコントロールされている点であり、しかもBAKはおそらくほとんどのベンダーの（品質？）認証プロセスをパスできないだろう。）

問題は 16650サイズでは価格競争が起きてないのと、震災のようなアクシデントが起きた時に頼れる供給元がパナソニックだけだと製品出荷がただちに止まってしまうリスク。

こちらがその 16650バッテリー（三洋改めパナ製）。
Diameter（直径）は18650より約2mm小さい。

2mmを稼ぐためにどこまでコストをかけられるかという話ですね。
個別に各社が採用していてはコスト高になるばかり。
そこで、Intelが音頭を取って一気に普及させることでコスト低減を図ると。

パナソニックにしてみればIntelが旗振りしてくれるのは願ったりかなったりでしょうが、完成品メーカーからすれば中国メーカーの出荷体制が整うか、新たに韓国勢あたりが参入しないと高すぎて使いにくい、といったところでしょうね。
